I spent several years studying the nature of color and designing a color theory course. This research profoundly changed the way I paint to play on the possibilities of color contrasts and relationships. I use a limited palette of primary colors and white to create the vast range of colors in all of my paintings.
My watercolors are painted in Plein - Air, which is French for open air. Painting what my eyes see outdoors creates a fresh spontaneity in observation and technique. It also imposes a sense of constant change with fleeting light. From Lanai, Hawaii, the Outer Banks, Belgrade Lakes, Deer Ilse, Maine, Vermont, the Gaspe peninsula, to Colorado, I have been painting landscapes that capture the essence of the places I have lived in and visited.
Oil painting is my other muse. I keep the oils in my studio because of their messy nature. When oil painting I often choose a watercolor study and several photos to work from. This allows me to create an image that combines a subject I am interested in with my ideal sense of lighting and color. The fluidity and vibrancy of oil paints allow me to create a heightened set of color relationships.
